With technology reaching into most of our homes, the ability to connect with others is increasing. In fact, this ability allows for you to make money in new and interesting ways. You can make money from home if you have a little time, and if you are willing to put in the effort.
If you are going to make money from home, no matter what you are doing, you will probably need an Internet connection. Whether you are providing freelance graphic design services or selling crocheted doll clothes, access to the Internet provides you with a way to reach more potential clients and customers.
You might also need a specific workspace, depending on what you plan to do to make money from home. Since my wife quit her job and started working from home, it was important to have an organized home office. Primarily because she’s Type A and the thought of having cluttered office gives her anxiety. 🙂
What Do You Know?
One of the best ways to start a side business is to base it on something you know. Consider your knowledge and expertise. Some of the ways you can make money from home, if you have the necessary skill set:
Freelancing: You can offer your writing skills, graphic design skills, or web development skills on a freelance basis. There are other freelance opportunities, including programming and editing, that you can consider.
Consulting: My husband has done consulting work related to statistical analysis, and there are numerous other consulting opportunities, from survey design to public relations to gardening, there are things that people want help with — and that they are willing to pay for.
Tutoring and teaching: You can make money from home as a tutor or an online teacher. There are many opportunities to share your expertise. You can help others online and make money, or you can set up tutoring sessions in your home as well, and work one-on-one.
Virtual assistant: If you are organized and work well people, you can be a virtual assistant, helping others keep track of appointments. You can also provide other services, such as answering emails and drafting memos. If you have the right equipment, you can even answer phones on behalf of your clients.
Customer service: There are companies that allow you to do customer service from home. You can make money from home part-time as a customer service rep. Companies like Convergys, JetBlue, and others allow some of their customer service reps and tech specialists to work from home.
Event planner: You can help others plan events, from parties to weddings. As long as you are organized, and you understand how to manage people, are capable of forging meaning, and can find good deals on supplies, you can help put on events.
Really think about your skills. Figure out what it would take to make money from home, and then make a plan to accomplish your goals. As long as you are willing to put in the time, it’s possible to begin making money from home.

There are so many ways to make money at home! Love this post.
This is just the beginning. There are hundreds of ways!
Good post Jeff! There really are quite a number of ways you can make money from home, especially if you have a marketable skill. My wife and I run our own business from home and love it!
John, I would be lying if I said I didn’t envy you 🙂
Thanks for letting me guest post. 🙂
Thanks for the write-up, Jeff. Much apreciated!
There home office is pretty and organized. You can check it out at
However I doubt Jeff or Mandy (his wife) would give the nod of approval if you try to rationalize an expensive office makeover so you can start to work from home. Maybe when the home income can pay for the remodel.
Agreed! That’s why our office remodel is going to cost $0!!!

I’ve never made money from home as that was never my goal although after blogging for a year I think it’s time to show me the beer money!! Great post and I think there is money to be made especially if you are a good writer or have needed skills.
Dude! Still not sure why you haven’t moved to self-hosted WordPress yet!!!
Great article. It’s a good reminder to people that they don’t need to go out of their way to make extra money, they can do it right from home.
Yup! You can save the expense of traveling, and save time while making money from the comfort of your home. It really does work like that.
Great post, I’m currently working on becoming a freelance writer and consultant. I have already made a little bit of online income and it’s very inspiring!
Nice work. It’s a bit of work, but would be a pretty sweet full-time gig.
Please remember to tell people that though there are many ways to make money from home, many of them take a lot of work. There is nothing easy and you should never chase the mighty dollar. If you are serious about making money from home, then setup a proper business and run it like one.
Truth! ^
I like the ideas in this article which are all great extra ways to earn a buck online and can also be a great way to help you out in the tough times as well.
I’ve recently posted a profile on care.com for babysitting and pet sitting. It’s not “work at home”, but more side hustle. Either way it’s a little extra money in my pocket, which I like.
Good list, Jeff. I think all of us could sit down for 5 minutes and make a list of at least 20 things we could do for money if we had to.
A few years ago I had no idea how important is was to utilize your skills and take advantage of this awesome thing we call the internet. It’s amazing how you can get started making extra money towards debt, financial goals, traveling and anything else you want — just by taking the skills you have and turning them into revenue.
Right! The internet is an amazing way to build mutiple income streams in your PJ’S!
Jeff- good post– how about the good old fashioned traditional garage sale–set up square and you’ll likely make more than just asking for cash!
